My Writing
Picture Books
Children’s Picture Books- Ages 4-7 years old
My writing explores individuality, belonging, and the emotional world of young children and is shaped by a love of rhythmic language. My stories are designed to be read aloud and shared, and I would describe some as modern fables and some as joy in a book.
I am especially drawn to stories that represent those who are a little different, for example; those who do not fit within social norms or those like myself with a neurodivergence. It is important to me that I create space for children to see themselves reflected in my characters while also enjoying a playful and engaging narrative. I also work consciously to give my characters the joy of a full and bright personality, and put bluntly- they are characters with differences- not different characters.
I set all my stories in the wonderful and dynamic Britain of today. My love of this country and the beauty hiding in the mundane, inspires me to bring the hidden stories of the world to life.
My debut manuscript, The Stoat and His Yellow Raincoat, is a rhyming picture book centred on a Stoat who chooses to wear a bright yellow raincoat in a woodland community that values sameness. As the story unfolds, his peers choose to buckle to peer pressure and what follows is the breakdown and eventual repair of their relationship- triggered by the theft of the raincoat. The story explores themes of tolerance, self-expression, and community, while maintaining a light, rhythmic tone suitable for reading aloud to young children.
My current working series follows the funny and frustrating world of Sleepy Bob. A loveable and unlucky character who travels his way through life getting excited and falling asleep as a result! His universe is huge, and I can’t wait to see where Sleepy Bob ends up.
Alongside writing, I am developing experience in sharing stories directly with children through school visits and interactive reading sessions. These opportunities allow me to observe how children respond to narrative, language, and character in real time, and this insight continues to shape and strengthen my work. I am particularly interested in creating stories that work not only on the page but also in shared reading environments such as classrooms and libraries. My aim has always been to get my stories to children, and share them with children.
I am currently seeking representation and publication opportunities for my work, and I am continuing to develop new picture book manuscripts.
